Dental Implants

Dental implants offer patients a stronger and more permanent way of replacing missing teeth than gum-supported bridges or dentures. Made of titanium, dental implants placed by qualified periodontal experts in Lexington, Kentucky offer a strong, safe solution to our patients with missing teeth. Because titanium dental implants are anchored in the jaw bone, they provide the strong structure to support tooth-replacement restorations. There are several different types of dental implants. During your consultation, we will discuss the best choice for your individual case.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Placing dental implants typically involves three steps: implantation, osseointegration (while the jawbone heals), and attachment of restorations such as a crown, bridge, or denture. During the first step, a titanium anchor will be surgically placed into your jawbone to provide the best support. Although we do not actually place dental implants, we will design your restorations and refer you to a qualified oral surgeon in the area. For the next several months after implant placement, osseointegration will ensure that bone cells in the jaw heal around the implant structure. After your implant has healed, a restoration may be attached during an appointment at our office. The restoration best suited to your needs will be crafted and fitted to your dental implants by our dentistry professionals in our office serving Lexington and Frankfort patients. Additionally, we can make your treatment more comfortable or relaxing using sedation dentistry, which is available in our Lexington office. If you are looking for a solution to missing teeth that provides strength, support, and long-term results, then dental implants may be the appropriate option. Please contact our office for more information or to schedule an appointment!

Sedation Dentistry

Some patients feel apprehensive about undergoing dental treatment, especially if it has been a long time since they have visited a dentist or if they need a lot of work performed in one appointment. Conscious sedation dentistry allows our Lexington, Frankfort, and Central Kentucky patients to feel completely relaxed during treatment without having to undergo general anesthesia. Almost all of our general and cosmetic procedures such as periodontal treatments and placement of porcelain veneers can be performed while the patient is under sedation.

The Sedation Dentistry Process

Conscious sedation can be administered orally. A small pill is taken the night prior to the appointment to help you sleep and avoid anxiety about the next day's treatment. When you arrive at the office you will be given additional medication that will help you to relax further. Although you will be responsive to the dentist’s questions and conscious during the appointment, the medication will relax you entirely. Because of the sedating effect of the medication, most patients remember very little about their treatment. Many of our patients can have years of neglected dental work accomplished in just one sedation dentistry appointment at our Lexington office. During treatment, patients are constantly monitored to ensure their utmost safety. To learn more about this relaxing approach to dental care, contact the Center for Cosmetic & Restorative Dentistry today.

Bite Correction

Bite problems can cause patients difficulty in chewing and can place undue stress on the jaw and gums. Chronic headaches and pain may result when improper bites are left untreated. Dr. Cash evaluates each patient's bite and uses special occlusal appliances to correct bite problems when necessary. Common bite abnormalities that may require treatment include overbites, underbites, crossbites, and overjets. As we age, our teeth often shift, so Dr. Cash will regularly check your bite alignment as part of his comprehensive approach to your dental care.

Gentle Cleanings

Although twice-daily brushings and regular flossing are excellent for maintenance between office visits, regular examinations and cleanings are an absolute necessity if you are to maintain a healthy mouth. Our staff will help you keep your teeth and gums strong and disease-free. To schedule a cleaning, please contact our office today.

Non-surgical Gum Care

Periodontal disease affects nearly half of all Americans over the age of 30. It is also the main cause of tooth loss later in life. Periodontal disease, which can range from minor gingivitis to periodontitis, is generally caused by bacterial plaque that gets trapped in pockets in the space between the gums and the tooth structure. Untreated, these pockets of plaque can attack the gum tissue and eventually expose the tooth roots. Non-surgical gum care will remove the plaque and smooth tooth roots to promote healing. If the disease is too severe for non-surgical gum care, surgery may be necessary to repair the gums.

Scaling and Root Planing

Non-surgical gum care requires patients to undergo scaling and root planing. After a thorough cleaning, teeth will be scaled to remove excess plaque and tartar that exists both above and below the gum line. This may require more than one visit to ensure that all of the infection is removed. Planing, or the smoothing of the root surface, will help gum tissue reattach to the tooth more quickly, and preserve the natural tooth structure. Occasionally, we will also adjust the bite after scaling and root planing. Anesthesia is routinely administered to prevent discomfort during non-surgical care and as always, sedation dentistry will be available to help you relax during your treatment at our Lexington office.

After Non-Surgical Gum Care

After scaling and root planing, Dr. Cash may prescribe antibiotics or recommend that you rinse frequently with an anti-microbial mouth wash. This will prevent further bacterial growth that causes periodontitis, and help to maintain healthy gum tissue. Antibiotic gels may be placed in the gum socket as well, which will help heal the infected gum tissue, and diminish any remaining bacterial growth.
