Invisalign® Clear Braces Overview
Many people have some degree of tooth misalignment they would like to treat. These cases of misalignment can lead to a great deal of self-consciousness or social discomfort. While some minor misalignments can be masked or remedied with porcelain veneers, more severe cases of misalignment will generally require some form of orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic Treatment
In many cases, the orthodontic treatment of choice for tooth misalignment is braces. However, there is a popular modern alternative to traditional metal braces that is virtually invisible to others and is generally more comfortable.
Invisalign® System
The Invisalign® tooth alignment system consists of a series of aligners that are made from sturdy plastic. These retainers are custom fitted to your mouth and your cosmetic dentist will use the latest computer imaging to develop your treatment plan. The Invisalign®aligners will gradually realign your teeth over a treatment period of several months.
Treatment Planning
Every two to three weeks, you will receive a new Invisalign® retainer to help gradually adjust your teeth. You will also visit your dentist every few weeks in order to have your progress assessed. You will wear these retainers at all times save for when eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth. While you will wear the Invisalign® aligners just as long as you would wear traditional braces, no will suspect you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Alternative Treatments
Not all people with crooked teeth or problems with misalignment are good candidates for Invisalign®. For severe cases of crooked teeth and tooth misalignment, Invisalign® is not an effective option. Traditional braces are a better treatment for severe misalignment problems. During a consultation with your dentist, he or she will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign® or if another treatment option would be more appropriate for you.
